Is the reason more millennials (which is a group that I find myself a part of) decide to up and leave the normal lives and life patterns our parents have a fad of the times or a paradigm shift in the younger generation?
I think it is fair to say that the world is venturing and travelling to distant places of the globe much more than the generation before us.
The question is why?
This is a super complex question and I’m sure everyone will have their own specific reasons for travelling and some may agree with what I write and others surely will dispute it. But I’m happy to express and try to explain my reasoning behind my own wanderlust, so maybe those who look to us “millennial bums” with confusion, jealousy and angst, may just be able to understand a little better why and maybe even sympathise with those that are influenced by the powerful desire to wander.
For me the passion to travel started when I was 20Yrs old and was convinced by my girlfriend at the time that an interail pass would be a super fun way to spend a long summer break together. We spent a month travelling round 8 countries in Europe by train. I will always look back fondly on that trip and at the people that made that journey the awesome experience that it was. Spending my days exploring new cities and meeting a number of new friends along the way showed me a different way of living, not just in the same old place doing the same old thing. To me it showed me the Good Life. This was my first long break of the monotonous life that most of us live day in day out. I’d say this is when I caught the travel bug.
A huge factor that I love about travelling is the ease of meeting and getting to know people in such a short space of time. I have never found anyone as open to friendship as those on the road. For me that’s the best thing about travelling, the people that you meet along the way. Some people you like some people you don’t but each and everyone has a lesson to teach. And by gosh I love me some free education. Whether it’s where to eat that night, where to go in the next week or even some profound idea that changes your whole outlook on something. When you meet someone you never know what they could teach you.
I personally don’t get kicks from just seeing somewhere and getting a cheeky pic, for me it’s the memories I make with the people I meet while being in some awesome surroundings. But I guess some people do get their kicks from that, and you know what that’s cool too. You do you.
I think the other big thing for me is having the control to choose what I do with my days while I travel when your home and working a job, your almost always working on someone else’s time. Making sure your on time in the right place, doing what they want you to do. When you travel your days and ultimately your life are yours to do with what you want to. Being able to choose what you want to do, when you want to. For me that’s freedom. And that’s what I yearn for.
So yeah that’s some of the reasons why I think I love to travel. Leave a comment below with your reasons! And you never know maybe I’ll meet one of you on the road someday.
Ps. Millennial Bums is a term I use to describe myself as I make my way round the world on the cheap with no real sense of direction or purpose, just along for the ride. Inspired by a book I read recently “Dharma Bums”.
