The Velocity thrusters did their job and we were on our way to become the first humans to reach mars. The years of research, testing and preparation had all come down to this moment. The Beginning.
When the body is hurled from 0-500mph in a fraction of a second the mind warps somewhat as it tries to register the speed is is being projected at. The synovial fluid in the meninges of your skull gets hit like a speeding train by the grey mass that is your brain, this effect caused by the immense G force that its under. Just before 1 on the countdown you take what may be your final breath and hold it. In this game you never can be sure if it will be your last.
Aboard the 1st manned flight from Earth to Mars was an eclectic mix of scientifically backgrounded astronauts. Thrown into the ship for good measure and publicity was a few celebrities, being the only ones who could afford to pay privately for the training. In total the crew numbered 24. All set by their hearts desire to be the first people to step foot on the red planet, our closest neighbour in the universe.
The trip was going to be a long one, we all knew that. What we did know was what would happen, this trip had never been done before. We were pioneers. If we had known what we do now from hindsight we would have never signed up. That’s the beauty of hindsight its easy to look back on what’s come before but you can’t take a sneak peak into the future.
Usually in space exploration up to this point the hardest part of the journey was leaving the Earth’s atmosphere in one piece. On our voyage this turned out to be the easiest part of our journey. We crossed the point of no return and after a shake few seconds we arrived on the other side of the Earth’s atmosphere propelled into the vast, endless vacuum of space. We had made it safely so far. The cruel gods of fate at this point laughed their evil cackle and now knew their opportunity was ripe to toy with us as they pleased.
