Goliath had been the pack leader for longer than even the elders could remember. His wisdom at the yearly gatherings of the wolves of the wild lands had kept many of them safe and helped their numbers prosper. They felt safe with him as a leader.
There had been rumours for sometime that he had been ill but the younger wolves had not seen any sign. Whispers of him becoming too weak to leave his den even under the cover of darkness.
This worried the high wolf Council a lot. They knew as soon as the position of the leader would be free, the power vacuum created would almost wipe out at least half the population of the wolves. They were secretly determined to find and implement a new leader before they had to. A controlled transition was what they wanted but the time they had to do this was running out fast.
