The keys were dropped into his open outstretched hand. The cold metal of the key shaft kissed his palm first then followed the butt of the key it’s black wide plastic base that held the lock and unlock buttons on its skin soon joined the metal in his palm.
He had never had a car to drive himself before. Learnt to drive yes but in someone else’s car with someone always present but never by himself a lone traveller. Free from the bounds and shackles of public transport and his active travels. He was free now a world of possibilities ahead. The open road, the endless miles the stories that would inevitably come to him as the rubber rolled atop the hard tarmac below….
