His mother had always told him to avoid the disused warehouses at the other end of the city.
“They are dangerous” That was what she would always say, but she said that about everything from riding your bike to crossing the street. That were her only warnings about the warehouses no details of what was dangerous about them.
The real fear about them came from his grandmother. She said there were bad things afoot in the darkness of the warehouses. It bred bad things she said. She never quite explained what she meant but it scared him down to his boots when he was younger.
Jake had turned 13 and after his birthday he felt like he had become a man. So he had to go and face whatever was awaiting him at the other end of the city in the darkness. His best friend Roger had agreed to join him on his quest even though he was even more scared than Jake was.
They headed out on there bikes while the sun was setting and the sky was turning an ominous orange yellow as the last of the sun peaked above the horizon. This would have been a warning sign if either of them were paying attention to the signs the universe was sending.
