Book Review : Moby Dick by Herman Melville

Definitely an unexpectedly enjoyable book. Moby Dick is another one of those classic books that I have found oddly that everyone ( and I mean everyone) has heard of but no one has read or listened to it.

As it is on audible unabridged I took the plunge and dived into the depths of the monster of a listen at around 24 hours of listening time.

Even from early on in the book it takes a much more philosophical turn than I had expected and delves into the mind of the narrator and the other characters throughout the book.

It is a great book that asks and tries to answer this why questions like the stoics but always somehow brings itself back to the theme of whaling. (Not the most vegan topic I know) . My preconceptions of the book were that it would just be a classic adventure story but I was surprised to find myself taking a look at life from a different angle when shown a different way of looking at the world by the book.

Don’t get me wrong there is a great and captivating story that keeps you wanting to listen on throughout the book but I think the different philosophical tangents that the book scurries off down have probably made it a secure fixture in the collective psyche through the generations.

Overall although it is a long book I would have to say it was one that was easy to listen too and really does get you thinking along the way. I would recommend this if you are after an epic read or listen that contains deeper currents than your average fiction book.

Anyone else read Moby Dick? What did you think? Any Favourite quotes?
