The house phone starts to ring at 3am.

Thats the worst time to get a phone call, surely. I think to myself the worst, such a fatalist attitude. Who’s died? What awful situation has befallen the person on the other end of the phone. My mind goes into overdrive at the thoughts and possibilities of the unending harm caused as someone rings the landline at 3am.

They must be in real trouble, why else would they ring at such a time?

I go to take the phone..

“hello” I gingerly answer as sleep not only coats my eyes but also my voice.

“hel” comes a strained and whispered voice on the other end before the call tone cuts the rest of the word or sentence off.

My adrenaline is now coursing through my veins. My fight and flight response kicking in whilst I sit bolt right up in bed unable to stop my mind from racing.

There was no number on the call, but surely they knew who I was they had my home number to call me. I try redial the phone but the tone is busy…
