My Road to Ultra Part 1

My Road to Ultra Part 1

Sometimes stories begin at the beginning but I thought I best start this today, roughly at the end of week 3 our of my 16 week plan to run an Ultra marathon of 50miles from Manchester to Liverpool. I was running 12 miles as prescribed on my plan that I have found on: https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/ultra/a774983/16-week-50-mile-ultra-marathon-training-schedule/

This was chosen as I was originally planned to do a 24 week plan… but life and me being lazy got in the way. Especially with the run up to Christmas dang that takes a lot of self discipline to train in that period. Self discipline I didn’t have.

But yeah with my first ultra coming towards me from the distance of a long time now only a matter of around 13 weeks to go and with little proper training under my belt I am understandably worried. I wouldn’t say I am a novice runner I have done 3 marathons to date 2 being last year in 2021. 1 with no training in October last year which I would never recommend doing. Just Don’t I thought it would be ok but when your body is screaming at you to stop at like mile 21 and your limping to the finish it all doesn’t seem quite worth it. Hopefully this has taught me the importance of training properly! That said I am stumbling into this training plan to fit in with my race timeline. I am substituting some of the runs through the weeks with the runs that I do with a club on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Hopefully these usually match what the aim of the prescribed runs are trying to achieve.

My plan is to try and be consistent and for the next 3 months running will be my focus. Diet, Sleep, recovery, training both gym and running will be all focused on getting up to fitness for my first ultra so it doesn’t come as a shock to my body when I ask it to perform a ridiculous task of 50miles in a day.

Have you ever done an Ultra? What are your top tips? Any trade secrets you can pass on to a total noob?
