My Road to Ultra Part 2

So I have been running for on and off due to injury and life for maybe around 10 years now. This is usual casual running including jogs around the city or events such as 10k or 1/2 marathons. I have also played a number of sports in these years. One thing I have found when playing them though is the struggle to recover effectively enough so I can train again and again in the same week without my muscles being so tight they feel like they could snap at any moment. Seriously sometimes after a hard gym workout I swear my legs have felt about as flexible as the tin man’s with no grease to allow them to move.

One thing that I have found to be a help to my recovery time is Foam rolling. Time and again when I increase my training load on my body the one thing I reach (cling to) is my foam roller. I try to incorporate this into my everyday habits. This has been good so far in this new year which is when a lot of people pick up and start good habits. There are a lot of benefits to foam rolling for runners, by increasing blood flow to our muscles in our legs it can increase the speed of recovery meaning we can train more frequently and effectively. Foam rolling can also release that tight feeling in your muscles which can help us be more flexible and run with better form for longer. ( Who doesn’t want that)

To be honest when I thought to write on this topic I had a quick google to research this topic and found a great video on https://www.runnersworld.com/health-injuries/a20812623/how-to-use-a-foam-roller-0/explaining a super simple 10 min routine that would really help improve your performance and recovery if you implemented it into a daily routine.

I follow a similar routine to the one in the video but I will definitely be following their routine closer from now on as the tweaks to the rolling form they used seemed like a great addition to what I currently perform.

Whats your favorite way to recovery after a heavy S+C session or a long run? Any tips and tricks? Let me know in the comments!
