“Hello” she whispered in her mousey voice, trembling a little as she said it. Looking into a face she hadn’t seen for 12 years, through circumstance and choice she had left this face to try her best to save it.

“What are you doing here?” He barked back, his face bleached white as if he had seen a ghost. She was a ghost, surely, this women standing in front of him had been missing presumed dead. She had walked out from him 12 years ago. She had said she would be back at the end of the week but never returned, no message not letter, no contact. Silence. Dead silence. He had sat at her funeral. Wept for her. Said his condolences to her parents. Spoken about her life with her close friends and family. They had been lovers before she had left. This was too much. After his initial anger he felt weak suddenly his head reeling, dizziness sweeping over him, his brain lost so many questions but which one to ask first. Where, how, what had happened and why. The question he had asked himself non stop for the last 12 years… Why?

“I’m sorry” Is all she could offer in reply. She had practiced this moment in her head and out loud in her bed sit a million times but when it came to seeing him again for the first time the practice she had done escaped her completely she started to feel numb. Was this the right time to have come to meet him the right place? Should she have even come back to him at all. She thought she owed it to him to come back to try and explain but now she was starting to wonder if it would have been easier on him to have left him alone. The fact that she had made contact with him, put him in grave danger and he wouldn’t know it. Just for a selfish act on her part to try to see if the deep love they had shared 12 years ago had any part left.
