This is my third of Bill Bryson’s repertoire that I have collected in my audible library so fair over the years, and I was very pleased that I had made the choice. It is a very fun and quirky travel book that is set in the great land that is my home the United Kingdom.
He travels from one end of the country to the other and stops off on his adventures along the way. The book is packed full of odd anecdotes that make a British person chuckle inside (so people walking past while I’m listening don’t think I have lost the plot). It mentions funny British stereotypes that are recognizable even in the modern day. It does have a little dating to the book originally published in 1995. Some of the political satire is slightly dated around the terrible service of British rail and the likes. But overall the story is mainly timeless around the weather (something us Brits love to talk about) and the odd human encounters he has.
It is definitely worth a listen or a read just for the way he honestly puts down just how most of us sometimes feel when traveling when we are wet through and grumpy but somehow find a way to laugh about it. It really paints the picture of how different the UK and the US are sometimes with the different vocabulary which can often lead to confusion. It is especially nice I think to listen to when we are all stuck at home most of the time these days, just preparing for the time when we can get back to exploring ourselves!
Have you read or listened to Notes from a small island? Or travelled in the UK? Where was your favorite? any places you recommend? Let me know in the comments!!
